Thamarasserry Churam Mountain Pass is known as the gate way to Wayanad. This place is above the mountains and it was with great difficulty the path was formed and it is called in malayalam language as Wayanadan Churam or Thamarassery Churam. The length of Thamarassery Churam Wayanad is around 14 km and is on the way from Kozhikode (Calicut). There are around Nine dangerous hairpin bends in Thamarassery Churam and it became popular after it was mentioned in few Malayalam movies by Kuthiravattom Pappu. The Lakkidi view point at the top of Thamarassery Churam gives a great view of the road routes that the vehicle came up all the way. Route through Thamarassery Ghat to the Gateway of Wayanad is greatand one of the majorr tourist attractions in Kerala.
Discovery of Thamarassery Churam has a great story and is connected to the Chain Tree which was about Karinthandan the tribal Paniya man, who helpd the British to discover this place, he was later cheated. One of the best Wildlife Sanctuary at Wayanad is Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can easily see wild animals than in the Muthanga area. It is because the Tholpetty forest area is far away from people and so the animals have a better area to wander without any disturbances.
Tholpetty jeep safari timings are from morning 7 am to 9 am and from evening 3 pm to 5 pm. November to May is considered as the season of Tholpetty Wildlife safari and getting jeeps to see the wildlife is difficult at many times, because of the rush by people to this place. Many wild animals like elephants, bisons, deer, monkeys, birds .etc. are found at the Tholpetty area. This area can also be seen while on travel to Thirunelli temple. This sanctuary is near to Mananthavady and special permission is required from Forest office to eneter this protected area. There are cameras installed in trees to prevent unauthorized trespassers into this forest.
From morning 8 am to 1 pm you can go on a forest trekking at the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary which is also known as the Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary.
Distance to this sanctuary is 20 km from Mananthavady, 13 km from Thirunelly.

You will have to reach the token counters earlier during the season times to get the tickets. In other times of the year you may get jeeps to do safari, but there is lesser chances to see wild animals.
It is because only during summer the animals can be seen, because they come to drink water and at other times they will ahve plenty of water inside the forest and there is no need for them to come looking for water. Also in months from August to January the plants (Adikkad) near the jeep routes will be over grown and is not possible to see animals who may be behind the overgrown plants.
But in summer times the plants will become dried and in some special months the plants will be cut off , making it easy to see animals. If you go out in other times you can have a ride in jeep through the bad roads, but you cannot see anything , unless any animals stands or is crossing the mud roads in front of you. To see it you have to be in the jeep safari at early mornings or late evenings when the animals cross these routes.
The rates of Jeep safari in Muthanga is little higher and is about Rs.650 for Indians and for foreigners it will be higher.

Thirunelli Maha Vishnu Temple at Wayanad is one of the most visited hindu temples in Kerala by people allover the World. this is because of the belief that al our sins can be washed away in the Papanasini river that flows below the hills of this temple. Thirunelli Temple Wayanad is believed to wash away all sings of this life and earlier life and gives us moksha.
The Papanashini river flows from the Brahmagiri Hills and flows through the Thirnuelly Temple area and it reaches the Kalindi River taking off all our sins.

You will be lucky to spot elephants if you are starveling in early morning or evening after 6 pm to 7 pm. But traveling in night time is dangerous.
Thirunelli Temple Wayanad Travel
So make sure you leave the Tholpetty forest area before 6.45 pm to 7 pm. The best time is to return from Thirunelly temple by 6.20 pm or 6.30 pm and travel through the forest area and on looking at the sides you can see elephants standing with the help of your vehicle headlights.
Do not stop your car or use flash cameras, because the elephants will get angry. Also don’t stop your vehicle on seeing animals and don’t make the mistake of switching off the headlights because the elephants will comes towards you if there is no headlights. At the times till around 7 pm they will be standing in road sides and when sunlight goes away fully .
The elephants will be mud covered and will be of cement color and with the help of your headlights you can see them standing at sides of road. Make sure you get out of the area before 7 pm , because the elephants will get down to te roads and stand in middle of the road giving you no chance to turn back as there is no space to reverse the vehicle in this short road. Traveling at night in this roads is unsafe and risky to two wheeler riders, because at any time the elephants can jump to the roads in front of you.
Rituals at the Papanasini in Thirunelly temple
Pinnappara is a sacred rock at the Papanasini and is used for making rituals to souls and is known as Bali. This is an area where Lord Vishnu the avatar of Lord Vishnu came to offer rituals. Lord ram and Lakshmanan also came to this place.
